CRANACH THE NATURALIST
ST JEROME IN THE DESERT

Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) was, along with Dürer, one of the most important painters of his time and returned again and time to one particular theme: St Jerome in the desert. This "desert", however, is a remarkable place. Cranach turns it into a luxuriant forest landscape, populated by extremely realistic animals and whimsical mythical creatures. Starting with his masterpiece "St Jerome in the desert", the exhibition for the first time places Cranach as a painter of nature in the context of his epoch where science and symbolism go hand in hand and take up an astonishing position with regard to issues of the Reformation period.
