With Angela Stief, Director of the Albertina Modern Vienna and the artist Christina Zurfluh, winner of the ÖGW Prize 2023 of the Province of Tyrol.

Like many of her large-format acrylic paintings on canvas, Christina Zurfluh’s works on paper also follow the principle of layered individual images. Here, too, the artist uses the technique of décollage to detach individual parts of the image, thereby partially exposing underlying compositions. In keeping with the cross-genre approach of her painting, the process of modelling intervention in the pictorial substance of paper and dried layers of paint is just as important in the pictorial process as that of painting and overpainting. The thought of letters of an alphabet comes to mind, of a system of signs that is constantly mutating and evoking new possible combinations.
