Free admission to the ground floor of the Ferdinandeum. For all other floors you need a ticket.

Your valid ticket to the Innsbruck Hofburg entitles you to a 50% discount on tickets to the Tyrolean State Museums. Similarly, you will receive a 50% discount at the Hofburg on presentation of a ticket to the Tyrolean State Museums.

The House of Art in Innsbruck
The Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum takes visitors on a cultural journey covering 30,000 years. From the Stone Age to contemporary art, outstanding objects and works are shown on five floors. Among other things, Rembrandt and Brueghel represent the masterpieces of Dutch painting, and the Artuqid bowl from the Near East the extensive medieval collection. Works by Oskar Kokoschka, Broncia Koller-Pinell and Egon Schiele are highlights of the modern collection, while Tyrolean artists such as Angelica Kauffmann, Albin Egger-Lienz and the violin maker Jakob Stainer contribute a Tyrolean perspective. Rooms for prints and drawings and the Studio 1 and 2 are venues for attractive new presentations and interventions several times a year.

Valuable cultural assets from Tyrol
Magical objects, religious rituals, artistic handicrafts – the Museum of Tyrolean Regional Heritage, with its unique collections from the European region of Tyrol – South Tyrol – Trentino, shows that customs of the past have an impact on the present and continue to shape us today. The Fulsome Year collection offers insights into the lavish feasts and fine festivities of the past that are in stark contrast to the worries and fears of the people reflected in the Precarious Life section. Other highlights include the emotional significance of folk costumes in the Tyrol at the interface between appearance and reality, the cultural history of the Christmas nativity scene since the 18^th century, and a fine collection of historical wood-panelled parlours. Where else can you discover so many remarkable elements of cultural history and even take a seat on chairs that are hundreds of years old?

The most important artistic monument in Tyrol
The splendid tomb of Emperor Maximilian I is surrounded by 28 larger-than-life bronze statues. Known locally as the “Black Men”, although they also include eight women, the statues represent the Emperor’s ancestors and role models and are an expression of imperial power consciousness. Maximilian himself is depicted kneeling in eternal adoration before the altar. Famous artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Peter Vischer the Elder and Alexander Colin contributed to the work on the imperial memorial. The result is a monument that is a jewel of unparalleled European craftsmanship, with splendid grilles, stone reliefs, the Prince’s Choir and the more than 450-year-old Ebert organ. There are amazing things waiting to be discovered in numerous hidden corners of the Hofkirche (Court Church).

Tyrolean history for the whole family
Where Emperor Maximilian I once stored weapons and ammunition visitors can now explore Tyrolean history and tales from the past to the present. What do archaeological finds tell us about the first human settlements in Tyrol? What was Tyrol like over the centuries in economic and political terms? How has the land in the mountains shaped its inhabitants and their everyday lives? What role have sport and tourism played for the people of Tyrol, and how have they developed? In the Museum in the Zeughaus (the Museum in the Armoury), themed islands provide insights into the history of Tyrol, while interactive stations build bridges to the present. Personal narratives highlight the perspectives of the Tyroleans. Together with selected objects from the collection, they breathe life into times long past. Many an everyday item from grandma’s time may evoke nostalgia, but the museum also encourages a critical approach to history. Areas with regular thematic updates invite visitors to rediscover the history of Tyrol again and again.

Tirol Panorama with the Museum of the Imperial Infantry

Wow effect in the giant circular painting
The largest painted artwork in the Tyrol is located in the Tyrol Panorama building, which is combined with the Kaiserjäger Museum: It shows the third Battle of Bergisel fought in 1809. The 1,000 m² panoramic painting is accompanied by the Tyrolean Stage exhibition, which takes a close look at the traditional image of the Tyrol. The narratives of people and their religion, the natural environment and politics are presented with the help of exciting, surprising and sometimes bizarre exhibits, covering a range of topics from the Alpine landscape to Andreas Hofer and the traditional Imperial Rifles regiments. There is a subterranean passage linking the Tyrol Panorama to the historical Kaiserjäger Museum, the regimental museum of the Tyrolean Imperial Rifles. The Bergisel circular trail is an ideal way to combine the cultural experience of the museum with enjoyment of the contemporary architecture of Innsbruck’s ski jump and the city’s natural setting.

Treasure chest with several million objects
The art and cultural treasures to be seen in the Tyrolean State Museums represent only a fraction of the complete inventory. The 8,000 m² store of the Collections and Research Centre houses several million items from the fields of art, culture and the natural sciences: outstanding paintings from Brueghel to Rembrandt, archaeological finds from the Stone Age to the modern period, items from the natural sciences such as herbaria and minerals, as well as the world’s largest Alpine butterfly collection, musical instruments, historical coins, watches, globes, photographs and much else besides. In total they make up one of the largest regional collections in Austria, which is readily available for on-site research. The restoration workshops also serve as a place of research for a well equipped team with many volunteers. The Collections and Research Centre was opened in 2017 and has received several awards for its sustainable architecture.
