At the beginning of each new chapter of the museum, society’s expectations change, the demands of the work of conservation and presentation change and so do the demands on the space.
Throughout history, there have been several conversion processes aimed at optimising the museum architecture for the growing work of the museum. But what factors and needs influence museum architecture? How have they changed over time and why? How does architecture influence museum work?
In conversation with Lilli Hollein, Director of the MAK and Alicja Knast, Director of the National Gallery in Prague, we ask how museums can be designed as open spaces and made tangible for visitors.
