Interreligious dialogue

Remembering, commemorating, thinking ahead. (Mourning) rituals in Judaism and Christianity

Based on the artistic intervention “Kaddish” on the façade of the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, we discuss: What does active culture of remembrance and mourning mean for whom? What roles do rituals play for a common feeling and community life? Can we also come closer together in civil society through an understanding of our traditions and a shared living remembrance? We invite you to an interfaith dialogue about the Jewish “Kaddish” prayer and other traditions on the subject of death and dying.

The Kaddish is one of the most important prayers in Judaism. It is said on behalf of the deceased Jews and commemorates them. The artists Oskar Stocker and Luis Rivera present their exploration of this theme in the form of a painted canvas over 20 metres long, which can be seen on the façade of the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum from 3 October to 16 November 2025. With their intervention, the artists are reacting to the rise in anti-Semitism and calling for remembrance of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The project was created in collaboration with the Ferdinandeum Library and is a visible sign of an active culture of remembrance.

With Jaron Engelmayer, Chief Rabbi of the IKG Vienna and Anna Kraml, Catholic theologian, Bible Department of the Diocese of Innsbruck.

Moderation: Martina Loth, specialist at the Haus der Begegnung and sociologist of religion.
