Since the founding of the Institute of Musicology at the University of Innsbruck in the 1920s, there have been plans to publish a history of music in Tyrol.
However, various attempts, initially by the founder of the Institute, Rudolf von Ficker, then in the 1930s and in the post-war years by Walter Senn, did not progress beyond an initial stage. It was not until 1998 that a resumption of these approaches led to the concrete realisation of the research project, which was completed in 2008 with the publication of the third volume of Tyrol’s music history. The three book publications contain a wealth of new research findings and represent the only comprehensive presentation of Tyrol’s music cultural developments to date.
The aim of the lecture is to show the main lines of development and highlights, but also the breaks in Tyrol’s musical history from the 6th millennium BC to the beginning of the 21st century.
