The Hofkirche is famous for the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I with its “Black Men”. The 28 bronze statues are among the most outstanding examples of Renaissance metal casting and, in addition to their monumentality, are particularly impressive due to the wealth of detail in their execution.
This tour focuses on the complex process of creating the statues, from design to completion. Which painters, carvers, sculptors and casters were involved? Selected figures are used to explain the work processes, alloys used and casting techniques. The latest technological research provides insights into this. At the same time, it also shows how many questions about the impressive expertise of the foundrymen of the time still remain unanswered.
