The so-called „Giant Circular Painting“ (Riesenrundgemälde) is Tyrol’s largest painted work of art. Painted in 1896 by the German artist Michael Zeno Diemer (1867–1939), it depicts the „Third Battle of Bergisel“ on August 13, 1809, during the Napoleonic Wars. It is one of only a few pre-WWII panoramas still in existence worldwide. During the overview tour, learn how this monumental panorama was created, the artistic ideas behind it, the role that the landscape plays in this impressive painting, and why it remains one of Tyrol’s most fascinating works of art to this day.
