Innsbrucker Hofmusik 08: Lux Aeterna - A Solemn Requiem by the Tyrolean Baroque Composer Leopold von Plawenn

When high-ranking personalities passed away, solemn services were held with pompous ceremonial: These exequies, which took place in front of a funeral scaffolding and an empty coffin (cenotaph), served to glorify the deceased: Music formed an integral part of this funeral spectacle. Leopold von Plawenn came from a South Tyrolean noble family with its ancestral seat in the Upper Vinschgau, was born in Innsbruck in 1628, entered the Swabian Benedictine monastery of Zwiefalten and died in 1682. His printed works were distributed throughout southern Germany and Austria. The focus of this concert is a solemn requiem by Plawenn from the third volume of the “Sacrae Nymphae duplicium aquarum” (Kempten 1672), a first performance in recent times.

BONUS: 6.15 p.m. Introductory talk on Baroque funerary culture.
