The splendid tomb of Emperor Maximilian I is surrounded by 28 larger-than-life bronze statues. Known locally as the “Black Men”, although they also include eight women, the statues represent the Emperor’s ancestors and role models and are an expression of imperial power consciousness. Maximilian himself is depicted kneeling in eternal adoration before the altar. Famous artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Peter Vischer the Elder and Alexander Colin contributed to the work on the imperial memorial. The result is a monument that is a jewel of unparalleled European craftsmanship, with splendid grilles, stone reliefs, the Prince’s Choir and the more than 450-year old Ebert organ. There are amazing things waiting to be discovered in numerous hidden corners of the Court Church.
